MOBILE ELEVATED WORKING PLATFORMS (MEWPS)

Introduction

The aim of the MEWP Course is to provide candidates with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely operate the forward tipping dumper and successfully sit both the Theory and Practical elements of the CPCS Technical Test. NPORS testing is also available on this category.

Candidates will be trained and/or tested by

fully qualified, experienced instructors.

The main areas covered during training are:

  • Describe the nature of the sector of industry and their role and responsibilities as a plant operator

  • Name and explain the purpose of principal components, the basic construction, controls and terminology

  • Conform with manufacturer’s requirements as per the operator’s handbook, other types of information source and relevant regulations and legislation

  • Undertake all pre-use checks

  • Configure and ready for travel (site and highway)

  • Carry out emergency lowering procedures

  • Operate controls from ground level, and from within the working platform

  • Manoeuvre the MEWP involving tight turns and limited access, using both forward and reverse motions

  • Travel the MEWP with the platform in a raised position (self-propelled units only) (Boom only)

  • Position the platform up to maximum working height

  • Position the platform out to maximum reach (Boom only)

  • Explain precautions to be taken for overhead services and other hazards

  • Keep within safe working parameters

  • Maintain safe and tidy working areas

  • Carry out shut down and securing procedures

  • Explain the loading and unloading procedures for machine transporting

CPCS Technical Tests

  • Theory: 1 hour

  • Practical: 1 hour
