Introduction

​

The aim of the 180 Excavator Course is to provide candidates with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely operate the Excavator and successfully sit both the Theory and Practical elements of the CPCS Technical Test. NPORS testing is also available on this category.

Candidates will be trained and/or tested by experienced instructors.

​

The main areas covered during training are:

​

  • Describe the nature of the sector of industry and their role and responsibilities as a plant operator

  • Name and explain the purpose of principal components, the basic construction, controls and terminology

  • Conform with manufacturer’s requirements as per the operator’s handbook, other types of information source and relevant regulations and legislation

  • Undertake all pre-use checks

  • Configure and ready for travel (site and highway)

  • Travel over differing types of terrain, including rough undulating ground and substantial inclines

  • Manoeuvre the Excavator in confined areas

  • Set the machine to excavate

  • Explain precautions to be taken for underground and overhead services and other hazards.

  • Excavate below ground level on a variety of excavations in different ground types

  • Place spoil into various sizes of vehicles/hoppers.

  • Grade, spread and level different types of terrain

  • Remove and re-attach buckets

  • Maintain safe and tidy working areas

  • Carry out shut down and securing procedures

  • Explain the loading and unloading procedures for machine transporting

CPCS Technical Tests

  • Theory: 1 hour

  • Practical: 2 hours 45 mins
